Effects of Program Promoting Sexual Literacy and Sexual Decision-Tendencies on Self-protection from Unwanted Pregnancies among Early Adolescent Female Students

Abstract

The quasi-experimental research with two groups pretest-posttest design aims to examine the effects of a Program Promoting Sexual Literacy and Sexual Decision-Tendencies on Self-protection from Unwanted Pregnancies. The sample group consists of female students in grades 2-3, aged 12-14, from a municipal school in the city of Saraburi province, Thailand. There are a total of 124 participants, divided into an experimental group of 62 and a control group of 62. The control group receives regular sexual education instruction, while the experimental group undergoes a program to enhance knowledge in sexual and reproductive health and trends in sexual decision-making over a period of 2 days. The research instruments consisted of a knowledge in sexual and reproductive health education and trends in sexual decision-making regarding unwanted pregnancies questionnaires and reviewed by 3 experts. The reliabilities of the questionnaires were .85. Data were analyzed by using descriptive statistic, independent t-test, and paired t-test.


The results revealed that The findings showed that the experimental group had significantly statistically different average scores in knowledge of sexual and reproductive health education and trends in sexual decision-making related to protection against unwanted pregnancies between the experimental and control groups after enrolling in the Program Promoting Sexual Literacy and Sexual Decision-Tendencies on Self-protection from Unwanted Pregnancies (p < .01, p < .05). Furthermore, there are statistically significant variations between the pre- and post-program scores for the experimental group (p < .01, p < .05). The results of the study can serve as a basis for promoting sexual and reproductive health education so that people can make educated sexual decisions and protect themselves from unintended pregnancies.
