Relationship between Age, Fall Experience, Duration of Illness, Depression, and Fear of Falling among Older Adults with Parkinson's Disease
Main Article Content
Abstract
This research aimed to investigate the level of fear of falling and its relationship with age, experience of falls, duration of illness, and depression among older adults with Parkinson's disease (PD). The sample consisted of 133 PD patients who attended outpatient appointments at Sunpasitthiprasong Hospital, Ubon Ratchathani, Thailand. Data were collected through personal interviews, depression assessment, and fear of falling evaluation questionnaires. The Cronbach's alpha coefficients for reliability were .85 and .95, respectively. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and Pearson's correlation coefficients.
The results show that older PD patients exhibited fear of falling 98.50%. (M = 46.51, SD = 7.08). Depression, fall experienced, duration of illness, and age were positively correlated with fear of falling among older PD patients at a statistically significant level of .01 (r = .57, .52, .48, and .40, respectively).
Healthcare professionals can utilize these research findings to develop programs aimed at promoting self-confidence and reducing risk factors for falls, as well as decreasing fear of falling among older PD patients.
