Abstract

This descriptive research aimed to investigate the relationship between health literacy and quality of life among older persons in the area served by Nong Ya Plong Health Promoting Hospital, Nong Ya Plong District, Phetchaburi Province. A total of 120 older persons aged 60 years and above residing in communities within the hospital's jurisdiction were selected using a multi-step random sampling method from three villages. Data were collected using Health Literacy and Quality of Life Questionnaires, which exhibited high internal consistency with Cronbach's alpha coefficients of .91 and .92, respectively. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Chi-squared test, and Pearson correlation coefficients.

The research results revealed that the overall health literacy (M = 60.46, SD = 10.52) and quality of life (M = 93.35, SD = 10.56) among older persons were at moderate levels. Chi-square tests indicated no significant difference in health literacy and quality of life between members and non-members of elderly clubs (x2 = 1.25, .68, p > .05). Furthermore, moderate positive correlation (r = .49, p < .001) was found between health literacy and quality of life among older adults.

These findings underscore the importance of promoting health literacy, particularly in information access and healthcare services, to enhance the quality of life among older persons.
