Abstract

The quasi-experimental research aims to compare health literacy, health behaviour and health outcomes of persons with hypertension between the group receiving the health communication program and the control and to compare health literacy, health behaviour and health outcomes before and after receiving the health communication program. The participants included 59 patients with hypertension, divided into an experimental group of 29 people who received a health communication program and a control group of 30 people who received health education according to the standard guidelines.  The instruments used in this study consisted of the health communication program, health literacy assessment, health behaviour assessment and health record form. The Cronbach’s alpha reliability of the health literacy assessment and health behaviour assessment were examined with values of .82 and .77 respectively. Data were analyzed by using descriptive statistics, Wilcoxon Signed Ranks, Mann-Whitney U, and Chi-square test.

The research results reveal that after using the health communication program, the experimental group and the control group had significantly different scores on health literacy, health behaviour, and diastolic blood pressure levels were significantly different at the .05 level (Z = 3.25, 3.03, and -2.02, respectively) but the difference in systolic blood pressure and body mass index was not statistically significant (Z = -1.86, -1.56; p =.11, .12 respectively). The results of the comparison before and after using the health communication program revealed that the scores on health literacy, health behaviour, systolic blood pressure and diastolic blood pressure levels were significantly different at the .05 level (Z = 3.16, 2.69, -2.46, and -3.11 respectively), while the body mass index was not statistically significant (Z = -1.00, p = .27).

Health personnel in primary care units should continuously implement health communication programs in patients with hypertension and establish policies to promote health literacy, change health education guidelines to be communication focused on changing behaviour to be consistent with the individual.
