Abstract

This study is a predictive correlation descriptive research to study which factors predict health literacy among persons with diabetes in Nakhon Pathom Province. The samples were 400 diabetes patients aged 35 years and over by using multistage random sampling. Data were collected by interviewing persons with diabetes using the health literacy questionnaire of diabetes patients with KR-20 reliability at .64 and Cronbach’s alpha reliability at .77. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and stepwise multiple regression analysis.

The results show that the overall health literacy of the sample was at a good level (M = 99.99, SD = 17.52), but 30.50 percent of the sample had health literacy at a low and medium level. The years of education completed, living with one’s spouse, and age were statistically significant predictors of health literacy of persons with diabetes (Beta = .25, .15, -.12; p < .05, respectively). All three predicting factors can explain 10.00% of the variance in the health literacy of persons with diabetes (F = 14.41, p <.001, R2 =.10, Adjusted R2=.09, SEE = 16.69). Therefore, nurses and related health team personnel should develop guidelines for promoting health literacy for diabetic patients.
