Abstract
This two-group pre-test and post-test quasi-experimental study aims to examine the effects of health literacy development programs on the perception of knowledge and health care behaviours of national health recommendations among primary school students in Khlong Luang District, Pathumthani Province. The sample consisted of primary students in level 4 – level 6 who were randomly assigned into the experimental group (n = 30) and the control group (n = 30). The experimental group received a health literacy development program for 4 weeks including the principles of national health recommendations, personal hygiene care, healthcare according to 3 principles (food, exercise, emotions, accident prevention, creating good consciousness in society, and exchange of information. A set of questionnaires was used to collect data including knowledge and healthcare behaviours of national health recommendations. Data were analyzed by using descriptive statistics and comparing mean scores before and after having the health information among the experimental group itself, using dependent samples t-test and comparing mean scores between the experimental group and the control, and using independent samples t-test.
The results indicate that in the experimental group’s post-test means scores of knowledge and healthcare behaviours of national health recommendations were significantly higher than the pre-test (t = -6.71, -19.82 respectively) and higher than the control group at p-value .01 (t = 6.37, 19.97 respectively).
Therefore, healthcare professionals can work together with teachers to apply for this program as a guideline to develop knowledge and skills of healthcare behaviours of national health recommendations for students.
