Abstract

This cross-sectional survey research aims to study health-promoting behaviours and the association between bio-social factors and psychological factors with health-promoting behaviours among senior high school students in a particular school in Bangkok. The sample size includes 150 cases, using a simple random sampling technique, as well as collecting data by using questionnaires on self-esteem, happiness, and health-promoting behaviours. Cronbach’s alpha coefficients are at .89, .83, and .77 respectively. The data are analyzed by using descriptive statistics, the chi-square test, and Pearson's product-moment correlation coefficient.

The results reveal that the sample group has a moderate level of self-esteem (M = 65.62, SD = 9.48), happiness (M = 116.52, SD = 5.81), and health-promoting behaviour (M = 76.88, SD = 13.79). The biosocial factor indicates that educational levels are relevant to the statistically significant association (p < .05) with health-promoting behaviour(x2= 11.25). Gender, age, body mass index, weekly expenses, and sufficiency weekly spending have no association with health-promoting behaviour. The psychological factor suggests that self-esteem and happiness have a statistically significant association (p < .01) with health-promoting behaviour (r = .33 and .41, respectively) in a positive way.

In conclusion, health-promoting behaviour encouragement should consider biosocial factors and psychological factors. Additional research and development studies are needed to strengthen health-promoting behaviour among senior high school students.
