Main Article Content
Abstract
This descriptive research aims to assess the readiness levels of village health volunteers (VHVs) and identify factors affecting the readiness, in promoting access to Thai traditional and alternative medicine (TTAM) services for the people in Phetchaburi province. The study involves a sample of 367 VHVs selected using the multi-stage sampling method. Data were collected using a questionnaire containing general information, attitudes towards being a volunteer, social support awareness of roles in Thai traditional and alternative medicine, The need for role development in Thai traditional and alternative medicine, knowledge of Thai traditional and alternative medicine, and readiness in promoting access to Thai traditional and alternative medicine services. And then, descriptive statistics have been shown, whereas stepwise multiple regression has been analyzed. The results demonstrate that,
1. Among all 367 VHVs/participants level of readiness to support people’s access to TTAM services is moderate (M = 98.00, SD = 22.77).
2. Factors significantly affecting their readiness in the promotion of people’s access to TTAM services (p-value < .05) include social supports, perception of the role of TTAM services, needs for TTAM development, and knowledge of TTAM (Beta = .33, .38, .40 and .43 respectively), all of which can explain the 30.2% of the readiness in promoting people’s access to TTAM services.
Provincial Public Health Office should formulate policies to encourage village health volunteers to continually transfer knowledge of TTAM as well as develop roles to have the potential to use Thai Traditional medicine, alternative medicine, local wisdom or folk medicine, and herbs for self-care, family, and people in the community by supporting the resources necessary to carry out concrete work.
