Pain Management Guidelines on Pain Level of Patient with Post Abdominal Surgery: An Integrative Review

Abstract
This integrative review aimed to analyze and synthesize knowledge from the previous research studies regarding the usage of pain management methods retrieved from a pain management guideline in a patient with post abdominal surgery. A total of 1275 evidence bases were chosen and 11 of them were recruited to synthesize. The recruited 11 articles were classified into 4 categories including 1) 1b, a systematic review and meta-analysis (1 article), 2) 1c, RCT (1 article), 3) 2c: a quasi-experimental study (3 articles), and 4) 2d, a quasi-experimental study with pre-posttest approach (6 articles).
The results from the current integrative review found that nurses had used 2 pain management methods for relieving pain in a patient with post abdominal surgery. The 2 methods were 1) non-pharmacological pain management methods (including music therapy, relaxing technique, bioenergy, assisting apparatus for post-operation ambulation) and 2) development of pain management pattern for post abdominal surgery based on 4 theoretical frameworks including CURN Model, Stetler model, Roy’s adaptation model, and nursing process.
The knowledge gained from this integrative review is important and beneficial for nurses and healthcare providers to reduce possible complications after surgery, reduce the length of hospital stay, save cost for the hospital, reduce the healthcare worker’s task, and lastly has a good satisfaction among patients who received pain management for post abdominal surgery.
