Nursing Care for Patient with Acute Kidney Injury from Aminoglycoside and Underwent Hemodialysis

Abstract

This case study aimed to highlight key analytical and procedures in providing the nursing care for the patient with acute kidney injury. The patient was reported with cellulitis from fracture at left distal end of radius (DER) and closed reduction with external fixation and K wire fixation. The wound culture was founded moderate Staphylococcus epidermidis, which responded well to Gentamycin, the Aminoglycoside group of antibiotics. One week after given antibiotic, the patient developed acute kidney injury as a complication. A pathological condition was founded outside the kidneys (pre-renal ARF). This lead to the insufficient blood supply to the kidneys and decreased renal filtration. However, the patient was quickly diagnosed and received hemodialysis from 20 December 2019 to 27 December 2019, with the total number of dialysis of four times.

          This study revealed that the nursing process jointly collaborated between nurses and doctors were important in providing proper care before, during, and after hemodialysis.

The concept of Gordon’s 11 functional health patterns was used to evaluate and provide holistic care. The patient was improved from the critically ill and the kidneys were recovered. The patient and cousins report marked relief of anxiety and return to usual activity. Nurses give advice on self-care and teach how to avoid kidney disease in the future.
