Nursing Care for Spinal muscular atrophy Pediatric with Ventilated Patients at Home : Case Study

Introduction: Pediatric patient with spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) using ventilator at home. It is a chronic disease that requires ongoing care to prevent possible complications.
Objectives: To study the implementation of nursing process in SMA pediatric with ventilated patients at home.
Methods: Comparative 2 cases of SMA pediatric with ventilated patients. Data were collected form medical records, relative interview and observation. Analysis data with Marjorie Gordon’s 11 functional health patterns including of nursing diagnosis, intervention and evaluation was used for nursing assessment in 3 phases: critical phase, rehabilitation phase and discharge phase.
Results: Both SMA pediatric with ventilated patients were 6 similar nursing diagnoses including: 1) Infection of respiratory tract 2) inadequate fluid and electrolyte imbalances 3) risk for respiratory distress 4) delay development 5) caregivers incompetence of SMA pediatric care. Nursing outcomes showed that all problems were resolved. The SMA pediatric with ventilated patients recovered well and were discharge from the hospital.
