The effects of kangaroo premature infant care program on perceived self-efficacy, knowledge, and behavior of nurses in the sick newborn unit

The kangaroo care for premature infants can help prevent serious illness, reduce infections, and increase breast milk supply. Therefore, it is crucial for nurses providing care to possess self-efficacy, knowledge, and appropriate caregiving behaviors for this group of premature infants. Objective: This study aimed to examine the effects of the kangaroo care program on self-efficacy, knowledge, and behavior of nurses. Research Method: This was a quasi-experimental study. The sample consisted of 19 nurses working in the sick newborn unit (SNB). The research instruments were verified by five experts and consisted of two parts: 1) the experimental instrument, the Kangaroo Premature Infant Care Program, which had a content validity index (CVI) of 0.95; and 2) the instruments for data collection were questionnaires on perceived self-efficacy, knowledge, and behavior of nurses, with CVI values of 0.90, 0.95, and 0.95, respectively. The reliability test revealed Cronbach's alpha coefficient of the perceived self-efficacy questionnaire of 0.80, and the Kuder-Richardson 20 (KR-20) coefficient of the knowledge and behavior questionnaires of 0.95 and 0.97, respectively. Data analysis employed descriptive statistics, including frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation; repeated measures ANOVA; and dependent t-tests.
Results: The study found that nurses had statistically significant higher mean scores of perceived self-efficacy and knowledge regarding kangaroo care for premature infants after participating in the program-immediately, at 2 weeks, and at 4 weeks post-interventioncompared with before receiving the program (p < .01). In addition, nurses’ behaviors related to providing kangaroo care for premature infants immediately after receiving the program was statistically significantly higher than before receiving the program (p < .01).
Conclusion : The use of the Kangaroo premature infant care program should be promoted among nurses to improve their perceived self-efficacy, knowledge, and behaviors in providing effective Kangaroo care for premature infants. This will result in better care for premature infants, contributing to their appropriate growth and development.
