Abstract

This quasi-experimental study aimed to evaluate the effects of a self-care program with family participation on self-care behaviors and quality of life among patients with COPD at Phrae Hospital. The sample consisted of 60 patients with COPD admitted to the internal medicine ward of Phrae Hospital and was divided into an experimental group and a control group, with 30 patients in each group. The research intervention was a family-participatory self-care program. Data were collected using a demographic questionnaire, the validated COPD Assessment of Life and Well-being (CAT), and COPD Self-Care Behavior Questionnaire. The content validity index (CVI) of these tools were 1.00, 1.00, and 0.95, respectively. Reliability testing of the validated COPD Assessment of Life and Well-being (CAT), and COPD Self-Care Behavior Questionnaire yielded Cronbach's alpha coefficients of 0.92 and 0.96, respectively. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, paired t-tests, and independent t-tests.

The research findings showed that after receiving the family-participatory self-care program, the experimental group had significantly lower mean scores on the COPD Assessment Test (CAT) than the control group, which received standard nursing care (t=0.68, p<0.05), indicating a lower impact of the disease on quality of life and well-being. In addition, the experimental group had significantly higher mean scores for self-care behavior than the control group receiving standard nursing care (t=-12.36, p<0.05). The findings suggested that the family-participatory self-care program can effectively improve the quality of life and well-being and enhance self-care behaviors among COPD patients.
