Abstract

This descriptive research aimed to study the relationship between social media usage and the impact of social media use on nursing students at Pathumthani University. The sample consisted of 232 nursing students who were selected by proportional stratified random sampling. The instruments used for data collection included a demographic questionnaire, a social media usage questionnaire, a physical health and learning impact questionnaire, and the Suanprung Stress Test-20 (SPST-20). The content validity of the physical health and learning impact questionnaire was verified by three experts, yielding values for index of item objective congruence (IOC) ranging from 0.67 to 1.00 for all items. The reliability test for the social media usage questionnaire and the physical health and learning impact questionnaire obtained Cronbach's alpha coefficients of 0.80 and 0.66, respectively. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and the Spearman rank correlation coefficient.

The results showed that the nursing students had a crazy level of social media usage. There was a low level of physical health impact, the lowest level of learning impact, and a high level of stress. When analyzing the relationship between social media usage and the impact of social media use, it was found that physical health impact, learning impact, and stress had a low positive correlation with social media usage at a statistically significant (p<.05). Therefore, the research results can be used as guidelines for planning appropriate teaching and learning activities to reduce the use of social media and prevent its impact.
