Abstract

Thirst is a common symptom found in patients after surgery, causing discomfort. A standard tool for evaluating this symptom will assist in assessing problems and enhancing efficiency of postoperative care for patients. This study aimed to translate the Perioperative Thirst Discomfort Scale (PTDS) from the English version into the Thai version and validate the reliability of the Thai scale. In this study, the translation and reliability testing of PTDS were applied based on the World Health Organization guidelines. The translation processes included 1) forward translation from English to Thai 2) expert panel 3) a Thai mono-lingual test 4) back translation into English 5) expert review (equivalence evaluation by the PTDS developers)

Compared to the original version, the translation results indicated that the Thai PTDS was equivalent in language, content, and meaning. The validity test revealed that the scale-level content validity index (S-CVI) of the Thai PTDS was 1.00. The reliability test obtained a Cronbach’s alpha of .75 and the corrected item-total correlation coefficients ranged from .30 to .65, which indicated acceptable validity and reliability. This scale can be used to assess discomfort from thirst in postoperative patients. Patients can read and answer questions by themselves. If the patient has reading limitations, nurses can read and explain each question to the patient, then allow the patient to respond according to their own feelings. Therefore, nurses need to understand this measure before using it in the unit. Therefore, nurses and healthcare providers should be trained to comprehensively understand the Thai PTDS before implementing it in their clinical settings.
