Abstract

This pilot study aimed to investigate the effects of a preparatory information for intensive care unit admission provided through digital media on anxiety and treatment adherence among cardiac surgery patients. A single-group pretest-posttest design was used with a convenience sample of 10 patients scheduled for first time cardiac surgery. Data was collected in January 2024. The instruments used for data collection were a demographic data record form, the visual analogue scale (VAS) for anxiety-horizontal type, and a treatment adherence assessment form. The 12-minutes preparatory information digital media was developed by the researchers using the concept of providing preparatory information based on the Self-Regulation Theory. It was validated by five experts and revealed a content validity index of 1.0. Descriptive statistics and repeated measures ANOVA were used for descriptive and pretest-posttest analyses, respectively.

The results showed that the mean anxiety scores before intervention, at 30 minutes after intervention, and at 48 hours after cardiac surgery were 35 (SD 12.90), 25 (SD 0.00), and 15 (SD 12.09), respectively; which reduced significantly from before intervention to 30 minutes after intervention and 48 hours after the surgery, respectively (p<0.05). Additionally, 90% (n=9) of the patients fully adhered to the treatment instruction in the intensive care unit. The study concluded that digital preparatory information reduces anxiety and promotes treatment adherence in cardiac surgery patients admitted in the intensive care unit. However, further research with an adequate sample size should be conducted to confirm these findings before implementation.
