The e-learning system is a tool that many organizations utilize for training and developing the knowledge of personnel due to its convenient and rapid access to content, as well as its ability to efficiently enhance the knowledge and skills of individuals. Personnel development in the form of training often requires high budget and faces limitations regarding personnel; who may work in shifts (morning, afternoon, night); leading to be unable to organize training at the same time thoroughly.
The study was an action research approach with the objective of developing an e-learning system for professional nurses on the nursing care of patients receiving blood transfusion, comparing the learning outcomes of nurses before and after the training, and examining nurses' opinions on the effectiveness and satisfaction with the developed e-learning system. The research was conducted in two cycles of four steps: planning phase, action phase, observation phase, and reflection phase. Purposive sampling was used to recruit sample group, which consisted of executive nurses, related committees, and professional nurses working at the critical care 3 ward of a university hospital between January and August 2023.
Research tools included lesson on the nursing care of patients receiving blood transfusion, a meeting minutes form, an in-depth interview form, a questionnaire on opinions on the efficiency of the system, and a questionnaire on satisfaction towards the use of the developed system. The research instruments were examined for accuracy and appropriateness of the content by three experts. Reliability test revealed that the questionnaire on opinions on the efficiency of the system and the questionnaire on satisfaction towards the use of the developed system had Cronbach's alpha coefficients of 0.96 and 0.97, respectively. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, which included frequency distribution, percentage, mean, and standard deviation. Paired t-test was also used to compare the differences between academic achievement of nurses before and after studying the lesson.
Results: Outcome of the development was an online platform of the e-learning system on the nursing care of patients receiving blood transfusion. The academic achievement of nurses before and after learning with the system was significantly different at a statistical level of .05. Nurses expressed opinions on the overall efficiency of the system at a high level (=4.22, SD=0.670) and satisfaction with the overall use of the system was also at a high level (
=4.28, SD=0.654).
Recommendations: The research findings should be beneficial for improoving individual knowledge competency based on the suggested teaching and learning strategies and monitoring actual practice in the ward. Further studies should be carried out to investigate the effectiveness of the developed e-learning system compared to other learning systems regarding learning outcomes.
