Sexual risk behaviors in deaf adolescents

Abstract

Deaf adolescents are another age that has transitioned from adolescence to adulthood. There are physical, emotional, social changes, similar to normal adolescents. However, deaf adolescents have delayed language development than normal adolescents. Using sign language to communication sometimes has problems getting information from others and communication has errors and mistakes. In deaf adolescents, there is a greater chance to have various risk behaviors since they are curious and high self-confidence. Social media and friend have a greater influence in expression of behaviors, especially sexual risk behaviors in deaf adolescents because they are too afraid to talk or discuss about sex issue to parents or ordinary people cause talking about sex is embarrassing. Conversely, they communicate within the deaf group and follow by various media but information may be misunderstand because some media do not have sign language to describe information. It could be cause of misinterpretation and occurrence of sexual risk behavior in the future. This review article aims to present the issues related to sexual risk behaviors and factors related to sexual risk behaviors in deaf adolescents, in other to present an explicit issue that lead to sexual risk behaviors. Relevant agencies or healthcare providers can promote and prevent sexual behaviors to enable deaf adolescents to appropriate express sexual risk behaviors appropriately.
