Peripheral Arterial Occlusive Disease (PAOD) has many clinical symptoms. The disease may begin with asymptomatic, intermittent claudication, and progress to more severe or multilevel occlusion that will present with chronic ischemic rest pain. Some PAOD patients may have ischemic ulcer and/ or gangrene. Several studies have found that most PAOD inpatients had led to amputation as primary treatment due to the critical limb ischemia. This article presents the important roles of nurses in screening patients with PAOD including health history Interviewing, physical examination, non-invasive investigation, and referring to vascular specialist.
