Self-and family management among persons with stage 4-5 chronic kidney disease from diabetes mellitus type 2

Abstract

This descriptive multiple case study aimed to study self- and family management behavior among persons with stage 4-5 chronic kidney disease from diabetes mellitus (DM) type 2. The participants consisted of patients with stage 4-5 chronic kidney disease from DM type 2 and their caregivers, 29 people for each group. They were recruited according to inclusion criteria. The study was conducted from June to August 2019. The research instruments consisted of 2 parts: 1) the self- and family management behavior questionnaire and 2) the individual and family interview form. The self- and family management data were analyzed by using descriptive statistics including: percentage, mean, and standard deviation. Qualitative data were analyzed by using content analysis.

The results revealed that mean score of self- management behavior and mean score of family management behavior were at good level ( = 3.82, S.D. = 0.41) and ( =3.98, S.D.= 0.42), respectively. The qualitative data that reflected self- and family management behavior were: focus on eating tasteless food, self-manage for medication, herbal usage, lack of exercise patterns, manage sleep problems by arranging bedrooms and having relaxing massage, reduce role of persons, promote self- perform in daily activities, manage complications, and lack of communication skills and plan of treatment with health care team. The findings of this study can guide health care providers to promote self-and family management, in order to reduce complications, slow down progression to the end stage of kidney disease, and enhance quality of life
