The purpose of this cross sectional descriptive research was 1) to estimate the prevalence of depression
in elderly, Muang District, Khon Kaen Province. 2) to compare prevalence of depression between both sexes
who had low social support. 3) to analyze risk factors and predictors of depression in elderly. A total of 921
elderly voluntaries aged 60 years and above completed the questionnaires using a two cluster random sampling
method. Data were analyzed using frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation, 95% confidence interval and
logistic regressions. The study found the prevalence of depression was 32.5 percent. There was not a significantly
different prevalence of depression in both sexes who had low social support (p-value > 0.05) However, the risk
factors such as increasing age, lower household income, poor perception of health status, less role of participation
in community activities and lower social support were significantly associated with depression. These factors were
the predictive power of 18.7 percent.
