Abstract

Patients with colorectal cancer who have a colostomy, or an ostomy experience challenges and adjustments to their lifestyles. Lack of understanding about self-care following colostomy surgery might lead to issues that have an adverse effect on the patients' quality of life. Thus, the objective of this quasi-experimental study (pre-posttest one group) is to determine how effectively the self-efficacy theory and a social support program work to keep colostomy patients with colorectal cancer from developing problems. Thirty-five patients with colostomies who were receiving treatment at the ostomy department of the Ubon Ratchathani Cancer Hospital between June and September 2022 represented the sample group of this study.  Furthermore, the conceptual framework encompassed Bandura's Self-Efficacy Theory and House’ Social Support, and the research instruments consisted of an experimental tool, which was the program, and the data collection tools which included a general information questionnaire, a self-efficacy assessment for complication prevention behaviors of colorectal cancer patients with Colostomy, an expectation assessment, and a complication prevention behavior assessment.  Moreover, data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and Paired Sample t-test.  According to the study's findings, colorectal cancer patients having colostomies had a mean score of self-efficacy, self-expected outcome, and behaviors on minimizing complications that was significantly greater than the pre-test at p <.001. As a result, using the perceived self-efficacy theory and social support could improve preventative behavior among colorectal cancer patients who had colostomies. Other comparable organizations can implement this program on colorectal cancer patients who have colostomies.
