Abstract

Cardiogenic shock (CS) is a life-threatening clinical condition caused by inadequate tissue perfusion due to cardiac dysfunction. It is a hemodynamically complex syndrome characterized by a low cardiac output that often culminates in multiorgan system failure and death. It is the main cause of death related to acute myocardial infarction (AMI), with a mortality rate of 45-70% in the absence of aggressive and highly specialized technical care. The intra-aortic balloon pump (IABP) is one of the most widely used mechanical assistance devices, also known as temporary hemodynamic support systems, used to augment cardiac output. The use of IABP has increased substantially over the decades, despite being expensive. Therefore, this article aims to provide information for the safe effective use of IABP therapy. The article includes the following issues:    1) IABP principles of operation, 2) objectives, indications, and contraindications for the use of IABP, 3) complications of IABP use, 4) weaning and termination of IABP, 5) nursing care for patients treated with IABP, and 6) a case study and nursing care. This article benefits critical care nurses by promoting their competency to accurately assess complications and resolve issues that may arise from using IABP correctly and quickly, as well as being able to provide proper, holistic care for patients treated with IABP.
