Abstract

Background: Depression is a common mental health problem among older adults, particularly those with chronic diseases, and it negatively affects their quality of life and overall health. This study aimed to examine the levels of depression prevention behaviors and social support, and the association of personal factors and social support with depression prevention behaviors among older adults with chronic diseases.

Methods: This cross-sectional descriptive study included 287 older adults with chronic diseases in Phon Khao Subdistrict, Mueang District, Sisaket Province, selected through simple random sampling. Data were collected using demographic, social support, and depression prevention behavior questionnaires. Content validity was examined by three experts, and the overall Cronbach’s alpha coefficient was .86. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, chi-square tests, and Pearson’s product-moment correlation coefficient.

Results: Overall, depression prevention behaviors were at the highest level (M = 3.31, SD = .73), and overall social support was at a high level (M = 2.45, SD = .58). Family support showed a weak but statistically significant positive correlation with emotional expression  (r = .126, p = .033). Community support was weakly but significantly correlated with sharing feelings (r = .134, p = .023) and social participation (r = .140, p = .017). Support from governmental and private organizations was not associated with any domain of depression-prevention behavior. Sex, age, marital status, and educational level were significantly associated with depression-prevention behaviors (p < .05).

Conclusion: Social support and personal factors were associated with depression prevention behaviors among older adults with chronic diseases, although the correlations were weak. Families, communities, and health agencies should collaborate to strengthen social support to promote mental well-being and prevent depression in older adults.
