Factors Influencing Community Participation in Community-Based Psychiatric Care in Yala Province

Background: The provision of community-based mental health care necessitates the involvement of the public and various network partners to guarantee that psychiatric patients receive suitable care and treatment. Consequently, this study investigates the factors that affect public participation in the care of psychiatric patients within the community.
Methods: Research on predictive relationships was conducted with a sample of 190 residents from Tha Sap Subdistrict, Mueang District, Yala Province. The study employed a three-part questionnaire, comprising a personal data section, a section on factors influencing participation in community psychiatric patient care, and a section on participation in community psychiatric patient care itself. Data analysis was performed using descriptive statistics and stepwise multiple regression.
Results: The study's findings indicated that several factors significantly predicted community participation in community-based psychiatric care. Attitudes toward psychiatric patients were identified as the most influential predictor (β = .298, p < .001). Additional significant predictors included mental health literacy (β = .208, p < .001), sense of community (β = .189, p < .001), social support (β = .167, p < .01), and community roles (β = .125, p < .001). Collectively, these factors explained 66.7% of the variance in community participation in community-based psychiatric care (R² = 0.667, p < .001).
Conclusion: This study illustrates that attitudes toward psychiatric patients, mental health literacy, community roles, sense of community, and social support are crucial factors influencing community participation in community-based psychiatric care. Consequently, public health agencies should prioritize the enhancement of mental health literacy while simultaneously strengthening community relations through integrated activities. These efforts aim to optimize the efficiency and sustainability of community-based care.
