A Study on a Model for Triage of Emergency Patients Before Hospital Transfer by the Emergency Medical Team of the Local Administrative Organization in Phothong District, Ang Thong Province

Abstract

The quality of triaging in emergency patients must be high and have minimal errors to ensure accurate prioritization based on the actual urgency of their condition. This research aimed to develop and evaluate an on scene-triage model for emergency patients before hospital transfer by the local administrative organization’s emergency medical team in Phothong District, Ang Thong province, Thailand. The sample consisted of 60 emergency medical volunteers (EMVs) selected purposively from 10 operational units. The research tools included an emergency patient triage knowledge assessment and skills assessment, with reliability coefficients of 0.78 and 0.81, respectively. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and paired samples t-tests. 

Results: The research findings revealed that the average scores for knowledge and skills after the training (Mean = 17.97, S.D.= 1.13; Mean = 17.53, S.D.= 0.9, respectively) were statistically significantly higher than before training (Mean = 11.85, S.D.= 2.13, Mean = 11.85, S.D.= 2.13, respectively) at p < .01. Therefore, the developed triage model for emergency patients before hospital transfer helped promote the emergency medical team’s knowledge and the skills necessary for triaging emergency patients before hospital transfer. This model enhances the performance of the emergency medical personnel, leading to more efficient and effective emergency patient triage services before hospital transfer.
