Development of Local Community Capacity for Food and Nutrition to Promote Community Nutrition in Patum areas Ubonratchathani

Abstract

The issue of nutritional status is a common and significant problem among preschool children. The organizations or individuals involved in the area should prioritize addressing this issue. This research aimed to develop a model for managing nutrition to promote nutrition  for preschool children with community participation. The sample group consisted of 70 individuals representing local government organizations, healthcare professionals from local health promotion hospitals, elementary school teachers, early childhood development centers, and representatives from the community at the Patum sub-district, Mueang District,  Ubon Ratchathani Province. The research is conducted in three phases: 1) exploration, 2) thinking, and 3) action. Data were collected through interviews, group discussions, questionnaires, and record form. Statistical analysis and content analysis are employed to analyze the data. The research findings indicate that preschool children face nutritional problems such as weight exceeding standards (10.45%), below standard weight (4.54%), and weight and height not meeting standards (15%). Regarding the management of food and nutrition for young children, it was found that both official and unofficial entities offer limited support, with minimal information and budget linkage between them. Additionally, the personnel's competency related to children's nutrition is low. The accepted model for promoting nutrition for preschool children includes creating an environment conducive to desirable nutritional behavior, establishing a comprehensive community nutrition communication system, developing household and community-level nutritional guidance, and creating a nutrition surveillance network. Public policies, management of food systems, and training of personnel on children's nutrition are also part of the proposed model. The study concludes that the collaborative practice of organizations, groups, and individuals in the community has developed a nutrition management model that aligns with the local context. This model will be used as a guideline for continuous implementation to promote nutrition for young children in the Patum sub-district, Mueang District, Ubon Ratchathani Province.
