Abstract

This cohort study aimed to investigate the predictive factors of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) based on health history and health behaviors. The sample was 161 pregnant women who attended antenatal care in Srinagarind Hospital, Khon Kaen. Research tools involved questionnaires. The data were analyzed by using binary logistic regression for the predictors of GDM. The study found three factors prediction statistically significant(p-value<0.05) of GDM. There were: 1) history of gestational diabetes in a previous pregnancy (OR = 17.48, 95%CI 1.74-175.38); 2) history of first-degree relatives with diabetes mellitus (OR = 2.41, 95%CI 1.03-5.65); and 3) excessive fast food consumption behavior (OR = 2.45, 95%CI 1.03-5.79). Considering all these risk factors, all pregnant women should be assessed for their risk of GDM in terms of their health history and behaviors. It is recommended to avoid fast food overconsumption in pregnant women. However, it is necessary to study more extensive risk factors of GDM. Finally, the findings could lead to the development of a risk assessment tool for GDM.
