Feasibility of Applying the Practice Model in the Operating Room for Nursing Students

Abstract

Practice nursing in operating room is one of trainings for nursing students’ behaviors. The practice model in the operating room for nursing students in three days may enhance their behaviors. The purpose of the descriptive study was to study feasibility of applying the practice model in the operating room for nursing students. Samples were 32 third-year nursing students who registered a course of adult nursing II, Khon Kaen University, after applying a 3-day practical practice in the operating room. Instruments included (1) the number of times they practiced essential activities, (2) the correctness of the practice, (3) their opinions about the practice before and after the practice, (4) assessment of clinical practice skills (objective structured clinical examination: OSCE), and (5) satisfaction with practice. Data analysis was descriptive statistics, including frequency, mean, standard deviation. The findings showed five parts. First, the average number of practice sessions per student was 3.07 times per student (= 3.07, S.D. = 0.69). Second, the average accuracy of doing activities was very good ( = 3.56, S.D. = 0.49). Third, the mean values of clinical examination (OSCE), overall, was good (= 3.38, S.D. = 0.26) in four groups. Considering each group, there were good ( = 3.41, 3.39, 3.32, 3.40 S.D. = 0.27, 0.27, 0.24, 0.25), respectively. Fourth, the opinions of the students on performing the necessary activities were moderately agreed (= 3.24, S.D. = 0.57) and after the practice were the most agreed ( = 4.94, S.D. = 0.16). Lastly, satisfaction score of students towards essential activities was at the highest level ( = 4.96, S.D. = 0.12). The findings suggest that the practice model applying a 3-day practical practice in the operating room is feasible for nursing students. Additional study should study qualitative study and compare behaviors in before and after applying the model.
