Evaluation of the Screening Service and Mental Health Support Project for Children aged 6-15 years, Health Region 10

Abstract

The screening service and mental health support project for children aged 6-15 years, Health Region 10, was established to provide screening service and mental health support for the four groups of children with neurodevelopmental disorders. However, there have not been the systematic and comprehensive evaluation covering all aspects toward the project yet. This evaluation research aimed at evaluating the project’s results and studying the approaches that contribute to its success. The sample groups were the child mental health screening team and the caregivers of at-risk children. According to the CIPPiest Model, a questionnaire was developed to collect the data revealing opinions on the project evaluation of two group (Alpha = 0.97 and 0.95 respectively). Additionally, the structured interview was also the main research tool in this study. Then, the data were analyzed via descriptive statistics and content analysis. To its findings, both groups had opinions about the project evaluation at a high level in all aspects ( = 3.89, 4.14, S.D = 0.77, 0.57). In terms of contexts and input factors, the content analysis revealed that the policy was not thoroughly conveyed and there was a lack of continuity as a result of changes in the people in charge. Meanwhile, the number of screening team was insufficient. A follow-up regarding the procedure was done to ensure ongoing treatment.  Yet, the treatment was delayed since neither the personnel nor the caregivers had the crucial screening competence and true understanding regarding the screening processes.   For the productivity and the impact, all at-risk groups received prompt treatment and thorough screening, which contributed to increasing parents’ confidence. Additionally, strategies for success included training caregivers in child care skills and knowledge of pediatric psychiatric disorders, with an emphasis on integrative work for quick and effective referral systems and personnel competence. As a result, continuous professional training was advised, and knowledge regarding pediatric psychiatric disorders should be promoted among caregivers and volunteers using effective communication and educational media. In general, this project could aid in evaluating and fostering collaboration between healthcare facilities, educational institutions, and local administrative authorities for the project's effectiveness and sustainability.
