Applying Nursing Situations in Teaching/Learning Midwifery to Enhance Understanding in Caring

Abstract

Both theoretical and practical learning activities in Midwifery focus on developing students’ knowledge, skills, and ethics. Performing a case study is an activity that requires students to collect data, analyze the pathology and treatment plans that lead to nursing care plans, and, finally, write a report emphasizing the academic contents that build their knowledge and guide their nursing practices. However, such case studies may not be enough to promote the students’ comprehension about nursing with caring, especially when they practice in the labor room where the environment is stressful and divided into multiple rooms. Moreover, the fact that a pregnant woman cis human could be overlooked when there is an undue amount technology being used to monitor their biological changes. These obstacles may prevent instructors from supervising students closely enough to be able to observe the caring behaviors developed between the students and their patients. New learning activities which allow instructors to observe and understand the caring behaviors and feelings of the students toward their clients may narrow this gap. This article aims to present an alternative learning activity called “nursing situations for nursing instructors to promote students’ learning about caring for pregnant women in labor”.
