Abstract

Pain is a common experience for many elderly population. The elderly is at risk for experiencing multiple types of pain. Barriers to effective pain assessment and treatment are fall into 3 domains: individual-based, provider-based, and system-based factors. Pain may be underreported as some elderly patients especially in the elderly who cannot self-report of pain intensity. So that comprehensive pain assessment is needed. Thus, pain management in the elderly is suboptimal. Untreated or ineffectively treated moderate to severe persistent pain has significant implications for the elderly health, functioning, and quality of life. Nurses should have a broad range of understanding of the pharmacologic and physiological changes that occur in the elderly. The present review on appropriate pain assessment and present pain management modalities focuses on relevant information for the nursing role.
