Factors influencing intention of female older adults to undergo clinical breast examination

Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women worldwide with an increasing incidence among older women. Early detection by using clinical breast examinations plays a crucial role in improving treatment outcomes. This predictive correlational study aimed to examine 1) intention of female older adults to undergo clinical breast examination and 2) factors predicting intention of female older adults to undergo clinical breast examination. Study sample consisted of 200 female older adults aged 60–69 residing in Chiang Mai Province. Data were collected using a questionnaire between January and March 2025 and were analyzed using descriptive statistics and multivariable logistic regression analysis, with statistical significance level at (p<.05). The results showed that study sample had an average score for intention to undergo clinical breast examination of 74.48 (SD=25.03) The strongest predictor of their intention was perceived barriers to breast cancer screening, followed by perceived risk of developing breast cancer. These two variables—perceived barriers (OR=0.92; 95% CI, 0.88-0.96) and perceived risk (OR=1.06; 95% CI, 1.00-1.13)—together accounted for 15.4% (R2=0.154, p<.001) of the variance in the intention to undergo clinical breast examination. This research provides useful data for designing CBE programs aimed at reducing barriers to knowledge and understanding related to breast cancer screening, thereby facilitating access for female older adults and promoting clinical breast cancer screenings on a regular basis.
