Abstract

Osteoarthritis is a common disease among middle-aged and elderly individuals. This descriptive correlational research aimed to assess the level of health literacy, osteoarthritis preventive behaviors, and the relationship between health literacy and osteoarthritis preventive behaviors among pre-elderly group residing in Ban Tom Subdistrict, Mueang Phayao District, Phayao Province. Multistage random sampling was used to recruit 140 participants. The research tools included a questionnaire on health literacy for osteoarthritis prevention and osteoarthritis preventive behaviors, with its reliability .75 and .80, respectively. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and Pearson’s correlation. The research findings indicated that health literacy for osteoarthritis prevention was at a moderate level, and osteoarthritis preventive behaviors were also at a medium level. Overall health literacy and its dimensions were statistically related to osteoarthritis preventive behaviors at a low level (r=.327, p<.01). Research findings suggested that health literacy and osteoarthritis preventive behaviors should be promoted among pre-aging group in particular, promoting literacy in access to health information and service for preparing them to be elderly who have a good quality of life.
