Abstract

Falls among the elderly are a leading cause of injury and death in the community. Promoting knowledge and first aid care among Village Health Volunteers (VHVs) is essential for providing effective care to falls among the elderly. This quasi-experiment research, one group pre-test and post-test design aimed to compare the knowledge and skills of VHVs in providing first aid for falls among community-dwelling older adults. Self-efficacy theory was utilized as the conceptual framework of this research. A sample of 30 VHVs was selected through multistage random sampling to participate in a 4-week self-efficacy promotion program. The data were collected by using 1) Village health volunteers' self-efficacy promotion program in providing first aid for falls among community-dwelling older adults 2) a knowledge assessment scale for VHVs in providing first aid for falls among community-dwelling older adults, and 3) a skills assessment scale for VHVs in first providing first aid for falls among community-dwelling older adults. The content validity index (CVI) was .9, and 1.0 respectively. The knowledge assessment scale for VHVs on first aid for elderly falls demonstrated reliability (KR-21=.66), and the skills assessment scale for VHVs showed reliability (Cronbach’s alpha coefficient=.86). Data ware analyzed by using descriptive statistics and paired t-tests. The results of this study found that the mean scores for knowledge and skills of VHVs in providing first aid for falls among community-dwelling older adults were significantly higher than before the intervention (p<.001). Therefore, implementing a self-efficacy promotion program is recommended for VHVs to enhance their knowledge and skills in distributing first aid for falls among community-dwelling older adults.
