Abstract

First aid for individuals having apnea or cardiac arrest is critically important. Delays or improper care can lead to disability or death. This quasi-experimental study aimed to examine the effect of a basic support promotion program for unconscious patients on the knowledge and skills in basic support for unconscious patients among royal volunteers. The sample group consisted of 100 royal volunteers from Muang District, Surat Thani Province, selected through a multi-stage random sampling. The instruments used in this study consisted of 1) a basic support promotion program for unconscious patients, which was developed under the concept of adult learning theory and learning by doing theory; 2) a general information questionnaire; 3) a knowledge test on first aid for unconscious patients with a reliability of .71 by the Kuder-Richardson method; and 4) a skills in basic support for unconscious patients with a reliability of .97 by the Cronbach's alpha coefficient. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and t-tests. The results of the research found that after receiving the program, the sample group had a significantly higher average score of knowledge and skills in basic support for unconscious patients than before receiving the program (p<.01). Therefore, the basic support promotion program for unconscious patients can increase the level of knowledge and skills in basic support for unconscious patients. It can be applied to develop knowledge and skills in basic support for unconscious patients among royal volunteers and community leaders in other areas to develop standards of care for people in emergencies.
