The effect of the readiness program on self-care behavior and quality of life among colorectal cancer patients receiving home-based chemotherapy, Nan Hospital

Preparing patients for home-based chemotherapy was a challenging task due to various limitations but aimed to enhance patients’ quality of life. The study compares self-care behaviors and quality of life in colon cancer patients undergoing home-based chemotherapy, before, during and after
a 12-week patient preparation program. The sample consisted of stage 3 and 4 colon cancer patients. The research instruments included the readiness program, which showed a high index of content validity (.92). The tools for self-care behavior and quality of life had Cronbach's alpha coefficients of .89 and .90, respectively. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and t-tests. The results showed the mean scores of self-care behavior (=3.03, SD=0.41) and quality of life (
=82.70, SD=7.31) after the program were significantly increased, compared to before (
=2.31, SD=0.55 and
=52.70, SD=13.41, orderly) with p<.001. Thus, preparation program should be adapted to the patient's context and incorporated into nursing education for patient preparation.
