Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of essential oil from Zingiber officinale (ginger oil) against 12 clinical isolates of C. albicans and  a type strain, C. albicans ATCC 90028, in both planktonic cell and biofilm. Minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC), minimum fungicidal concentration (MFC) and minimum eradication biofilm concentration (MEBC) of ginger oils were evaluated by broth microdilution and crystal violet staining assay. The results from broth microdilution assay revealed that the MIC and MFC of ginger oil on planktonic cell were 0.3 % (v/v) and 0.3 %-0.6 % (v/v), respectively. Moreover, MIC and MFC of ginger oil on sessile cells in biofilm were 0.6 %-5.0 %(v/v),  and 2.5 %-5.0 % (v/v), respectively. Employing crystal violet staining assay for biofilm eradication study, the result showed that 0.3 %-5.0 % (v/v) of ginger oil could eradicate 62 %-84 % of mature biofilm.
