ในระยะคลอดและหลังคลอดอาจจะมีเหตุการณ์ไม่คาดคิดที่ทำให้สตรีตั้งครรภ์เสียเลือดเป็นจำนวนมากเกิดขึ้นได้ ถึงแม้ว่าทีมแพทย์และพยาบาลจะสามารถช่วยให้รอดชีวิตจากการเสียเลือดเป็นจำนวนมากได้แต่ก็ยังมีภาวะแทรกซ้อนที่ไม่มีใคร ต้องการให้เกิดขึ้นสามารถเกิดตามมาภายหลังได้ ภาวะนั้นได้แก่ ชีแฮน ซินโดรม (Sheehan Syndrome) ซึ่งเป็นภาวะที่ส่งผลสำคัญ ต่อความเป็นเพศหญิง ถ้าเมื่อเกิดมีอาการแล้ว การรักษาคือต้องได้รับฮอร์โมนทดแทนไปอย่างยาวนาน การป้องกันการเสียเลือด จำนวนมากจึงเป็นวิธีที่ดีที่สุดเพื่อไม่ให้สตรีเกิดภาวะดังกล่าว บทความนี้นำเสนอแนวทางการประเมินความเสี่ยง การรักษาและ การพยาบาลเพื่อป้องกันไม่ให้เกิดภาวะตกเลือดจำนวนมาก ทั้งนี้เพื่อลดอัตราการตายของมารดาจากภาวะตกเลือดหลังคลอดและ ภาวะซีแฮนซินโดรม
