The Effect of an automated Chemotherapy drug compounding machine on dissolution time and quality of life among healthcare workers, Bhumibol Adulyadej Hospital

This quasi-experimental research aimed to compare the dissolution time of chemotherapy drug between the use of an automated chemotherapy drug compounding machine and manual shaking, and to examine the quality of life among healthcare workers following its implementation. The sample consisted of 20 healthcare workers. The research instruments included: 1) a demographic data form, 2) a record form for the dissolution time of Cyclophosphamide, and 3) a quality-of-life questionnaire using the Thai version of the World Health Organization Quality of Life instrument (WHOQOL–BREF–THAI). Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Wilcoxon signed-rank test, Mann–Whitney U test and paired t-tests.
The results showed that the dissolution time of chemothcvapy drugs using the automated chemotherapy drug compounding machine was significantly shorter than that of manual shaking (z = 11.807, p < .001). Additionally, after the implementation of the automated machine, the quality of life of the healthcare workers significantly improved compared to the pre-intervention period (t = -6.34, p < .001). Improvements were observed across all domains of quality of life, with the greatest increase in the environmental domain, followed by physical health, psychological well-being, and social relationships. In conclusion, the automated chemotherapy drug compounding machine enhances the efficiency of chemotherapy preparation by reducing drug dissolution time and improving the quality of life of healthcare workers.
