Effects of the Family Caregiver Capacity Development Program on the Activities of Daily Living (ADL) and Complication Prevention in Stroke Patients in the Intermediate Care System, Nong Ruea District, Khon Kaen Province

Care for patients with stroke in the intermediate care system is more specialized and complex than general patient care. Therefore, family caregivers need to develop their knowledge and caregiving skills to prevent complications, promote patients’ activities of daily living, and enhance their quality of life effectively. This study aimed to examine effects of the family caregiver capacity development program on the ADL and complication prevention in stroke patients in the intermediate care system. A one-group quasi-experimental study with a pretest–posttest design was conducted. The participants consisted of family caregivers and stroke patients receiving intermediate care services. A total of 33 caregiver–patient dyads were recruited. The intervention was implemented for 12 weeks. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and paired t-tests. This study was approved by the Human Research Ethics Committee of Boromarajonani College of Nursing, Bangkok, approval number G-EC-Fb-17/2568, on April 4, 2025.
The results revealed that the mean knowledge score for patient care after the intervention (M = 17.75, SD = 3.01) was significantly higher than before the intervention (M = 12.75, SD = 3.07) (t = 8.42, and p < .001). The mean activities of daily living score after the intervention (M = 16.73, SD = 1.48) was significantly higher than before the intervention (M = 11.61, SD=2.35) (t = 16.35, and p < .001). In addition, the mean quality-of-life score after the intervention (M=6.18, SD=1.40) was significantly higher than before the intervention (M = 10.64, SD = 2.32) (t = 13.66, and p < .001). These findings suggest that the caregiver capacity development program enhanced caregivers’ ability to provide care, improved patients’ functional outcomes and quality of life, and contributed to a reduction in the risk of certain complications, including pressure ulcers and falls.
