Applying Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) to Develop a Postoperative Care System for the Prevention of Venous Thromboembolism

Modern healthcare system development widely adopts the concept of Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) to enhance service efficiency, eliminate redundant processes, and ensure patient safety and professional standards. In 2019, the Department of Surgery, Faculty of Medicine Ramathibodi Hospital, recognized the critical impact of Venous Thromboembolism (VTE) in postoperative surgical patients, which can lead to disability, mortality, and significant burdens on the Thai public health system. This project aimed to develop a VTE prevention system by applying the CQI framework. Results: The implementation of the system yielded the following outcomes: Healthcare personnel demonstrated 100% accuracy in knowledge and practice regarding VTE prevention. Postoperative patients achieved 100% proficiency in self-care knowledge and skills. The incidence of postoperative VTE was reduced to 0%. Satisfaction rates among both patients and personnel reached 100% (at high to highest levels). Conclusion: The application of CQI in developing a VTE prevention system not only ensures patient safety but also enhances the competency of healthcare providers and patient engagement in their own recovery.
