The Effects of Health Literacy Enhancement Program on Health Literacy Self-care Behaviors and Clinical Outcomes among Hypertension Patients with Risk Chronic Kidney Disease

Abstract

 This quasi-experimental research was a two-group pretest-posttest design. The purposes of the research were to study the effects of a health literacy enhancement program on health literacy self-care behaviors and clinical outcomes among hypertension patients with risk chronic kidney disease. The sample was selected by Simple random sampling experimental group and a comparative group with 30 persons each. Research instruments were 1) a health literacy enhancement program. The program was based on the concept of health literacy by the department of health, over a 12-week period. 2) a handbook of health literacy and the prevention and delay of kidney disease progression and 3) Questionnaires on health literacy and self-care behaviors. Cronbach’s alpha coefficient of health literacy and self-care behaviors were .87 and .84, respectively. Data were analyzed by descriptive statistics and a t-test.
The result revealed as follows: after enrolling in the program, mean of health literacy self-care behaviors and creatinine of the experimental group were higher than before enrolling in the program and higher than the comparative group to a statistically significant degree at p-value < .05. Blood pressure and urine albuminuria of the experimental group were lower than before enrolling the program and lower than the comparative group at p-value <.05. These findings suggest that a health literacy enhancement program can enhance health literacy and help prevent chronic kidney disease among hypertension patients with risk chronic kidney disease.
