Abstract

This descriptive research aimed to study self-care behaviors and factors related to self-care behaviors among the elderly in Yala Province. The sample consisted of 190 elderly individuals, selected by simple random sampling. The research instrument was a questionnaire, verified for content validity (IOC = 0.98–1.00). The reliability for Part 2 and Part 3 was .925 and .82, respectively. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and Pearson’s correlation coefficient.
The results revealed that overall self-care behaviors were at a high level (M = 2.39, SD = 0.55). The environmental hygiene management aspect had the highest mean score (M = 2.64, SD = 0.57), while the exercise aspect had the lowest (M = 2.04, SD = 0.74), which was at a moderate level. Factors significantly correlated with self-care behaviors (p < .05) were education level (r = .239), enabling factors (r = .216), reinforcing factors (r = .162), family characteristics (r = -.165), gender (r = .160), and predisposing factors (r = .145).
This indicates that the elderly in Yala Province have good overall health behaviors, but exercise behaviors still require promotion. Therefore, relevant stakeholders should support and design appropriate, safe, and accessible exercise activities, along with promoting social integration, such as elderly clubs, to foster sustainable health for the elderly.
