This retrospective descriptive study aimed to investigate outcomes of care and factors associated with mortality in neonates with hypoglycemia in the neonatal intensive care unit. A purposive sampling of 100 newborns with hypoglycemia. Data were collected from electronic medical records through the hospital’s three-level data verification system. Statistical analyses included descriptive statistics (percentages, means, and standard deviations) and association tests using Chi-squared and Fisher’s exact tests.
The results showed that neonates had a mean blood glucose level of 31.79 ± 12.81 mg/dL, with 13 deaths (13% mortality rate). Twelve factors were significantly associated with neonatal mortality (P<.05), comprising: 1) eleven neonatal factors including birth weight <1,500 g, Apgar scores <7 at 1 and 5 minutes, respiratory distress syndrome, endotracheal intubation, pneumothorax, intraventricular hemorrhage, congenital heart disease, neonatal sepsis, blood transfusion, and phototherapy; and 2) one maternal factor: gestational diabetes mellitus. This research findings indicated that the neonates with hypoglycemia had a high mortality and complication rate.
