Abstract

This quasi-experimental research design with a control group and pre-posttest studied the effect of a self-efficacy enhancement program on resiliently preventing substance abuse among early adolescents. The sample comprised 68 secondary school students at the Matthayom 2 level aged 13 to 14 in Phetchaburi Province. They were randomly assigned to experimental and control groups of 34 participants each. The experimental group experienced the self-efficacy enhancement program against substance abuse for 8 weeks, 120-150 minutes per session, once weekly without interruption. The control group received routine care and continued their regular school schedule. The mean score of resolve against substance abuse was compared between the experimental and control groups by the dependent t-test. The difference in mean resilience scores pre- and post- implementation of the program was compared to an independent t-test.
Results were that 1) the mean score of resilience in preventing substance abuse scores after participating in the program (M=236.05, SD=10.06) was higher than before the intervention (M=196.17, SD=10.06) at a statistical significance of .001 (t=13.36, p < .05) 2) The difference in mean scores of resilience in preventing substance abuse between the experimental group (D1= 39.88, SD=17.39), which received the program, and the control group (D1= 1.23, SD=37.66), which received routine care and continued their regular school schedule, was significant (t=5.43, p < .05)
These findings suggest that the self-efficacy enhancement program increases resilience in preventing substance abuse among early adolescents.
