Abstract

This research aimed to examine: 1) the levels of health literacy, self-efficacy, and self-management abilities of patients undergoing hemodialysis, and 2) the influence of health literacy and self-efficacy on the self-management abilities of these patients. The sample consisted of 150 patients receiving hemodialysis, selected through stratified random sampling and simple random sampling methods. Data were collected using four questionnaires: 1) demographic information, 2) health literacy questionnaire, 3) self-efficacy questionnaire, and 4) health-related self-management abilities questionnaire. The content validity index (CVI) was found to be 0.98, while the internal consistency reliability measured by Cronbach’s Alpha was 0.94, 0.87, and 0.94, respectively. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and multiple regression analysis.
The results showed that: 1) the levels of health literacy, self-efficacy, and self-management abilities in the sample group were high; and 2) health literacy and self-efficacy significantly influenced and together predicted 64.8% of the self-management abilities of hemodialysis patients, with statistical significance at the .05 level. Therefore, nurses should prioritize promoting health literacy and self-efficacy to enhance the skills and self-management abilities of patients undergoing hemodialysis.
