The Effects of a Mental Health Literacy Enhancement Program on Nursing Student Mental Health Status in Nursing Colleges under Praboromarajchanok Institute in the Central Region Network

Abstract

This quasi-experimental research used a two-group, pretest – posttest design to examine the effect of a mental health literacy enhancement program on nursing students. Sixty nursing students, randomly assigned to the control and experimental groups of 30 per group. The experimental group received a mental health literacy enhancement program, and the control group received routine activities. The research instruments comprised: a mental health literacy enhancement program; Thai version of depression anxiety stress scale (DASS-21), The mental health literacy enhancement program had content validity by three experts and DASS-21 reliability was determined with a Cronbach’s alpha coefficient of .91. The data were analyzed by descriptive statistics and t-test.
The result of the study were as follows: 1) After attending the program, the mean mental health status scores for; depression; anxiety; and stress were lower than the pretest at a statistically significant levels (p<.001) 2) The mean difference of mental health status scores including between before and after intervention in experimental group; depression; anxiety; and stress were significantly higher than the control group at a statistically significant levels (p<.001).
The finding of the study suggest that the mental health literacy enhancement program was able to increases the mental health status of nursing students. Therefore, this mental health literacy enhancement program can be an alternative intervention for healthcare provider to enhance the mental health of nursing students.
