Abstract

This quasi-experimental study aimed to examine an effect of an educational program on caregivers’ knowledge and ability enhancement regarding neonatal jaundice undergoing phototherapy by comparing caregivers’ knowledge and jaundice assessment competency. The sample consisted of 48 caregivers of newborns treated with phototherapy who were randomly selected and assigned to a control group of 24 caregivers and an experimental group of 24 caregivers. The research instruments consisted of knowledge testing on caring for newborns with jaundice treated by phototherapy and the ability of jaundice assessment form with the Index of Item Objective Congruence (IOC) of 0.86 and 1.00, respectively. The scales’ reliability was conducted using the KuderRichardson (KR-20), which was 0.78 and 0.81, respectively. Research data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, independent t-tests and dependent t-tests.

The results showed that the experimental group had a significantly higher mean score on knowledge than the control group (t = 8.25, p<.01). After the program, the experimental group had an ability enhancement regarding neonatal jaundice undergoing phototherapy score different from before participating in the program significantly (p<.01). Nurses can apply the findings to develop guidelines for educating caregivers of newborns treated with phototherapy.
