This mixed methods study aimed to explore the relationship between nurses’ stress and fear and their awareness of duties and investigate how their stress and fear affected their performance during the COVID-19 pandemic. The study was conducted among 509 registered nurses from Charoen Krung Pracharak Hospital, using the following instruments: Suanprung Stress Test-20 (SPST-20) by the Department of Mental Health, Fear of COVID-19 Pandemic Survey, and Registered Nurses’ Awareness of Duties Survey. The data were analysed using descriptive statistics, while statistical relationships were tested using Pearson product moment correlation coefficients with the p-value set below .05 (p < .05). A group of 15 volunteers participated in an in-depth interview, which was analysed using thematic analysis.
The results showed that most registered nurses had high levels of stress (45.8%), medium levels of fear (67.6%), and extremely high levels of awareness (52.8%); however, no relationship was found between their stress and fear and their awareness of duties during the COVID-19 pandemic (r = -.058 , p = .189 and r = .023, p = .602, respectively). Emerging from the in-depth interview with 15 participants were the following four themes: 1) abandoning family in times of crisis, 2) fear and primary responsibilities for patients, 3) burnout syndrome, and 4) psychosocial needs. This suggests that hospital executives should appropriately manage nurse staffing and provide physical and mental health care for nursing staff.
